2+2 Connect

Give learners control.

Project Background:

This was one of my first eLearning projects in Storyline. The Leadership Development team needed support to redesign a legacy program that would inform and encourage leaders of the benefits of frequent performance check-in conversations and drive leaders to the Check-In tools feature inside of the LMS. One of the challenges for this project was that each business unit was decentralized, so we couldn’t assign or prescribe this content to every leader within the company, it’d be opt-in by business unit. For our project to be successful, we had to make the information and the experience valuable enough for individual HR organizations to sign up their employees.

For this project, the source material came from legacy training guides that were created from before our company merger. Since we wanted a self-paced experience to reach a larger audience, the content would need to be redesigned as an eLearning course. One activity, an in-person roleplay scenario, was reimagined and gamified as a Choose Your Own (Leadership) Adventure activity, which we used to give learners control of a performance conversation from the perspective of a leader. In this activity the learners see different employee responses and endings depending upon the questions they ask and how they lead the performance conversation.

The videos were filmed with the help of a professional video production crew. Previously, for projects of this scope we would use a vendor to produce this type of video, but through a partnership with an internal content creation group, we were able to produce the video content in house using company locations and props. The only external resource on this project were the actors.

As a result of this program we increased the adoption and usage of the Check-In function in the LMS, formed an internal partnership with the internal content creation group, and justified the need for an organizational approach for frequent check-in conversations.

What was my role in this project?

  • Hosted discussions with stakeholders to analyze which topics from the legacy content would have the greatest impact in order to prioritize our focus on the stated learning objectives

  • Defined the 2+2 Connect Model to help leaders have better conversations with their employees

  • Storyboarded and wrote all the content

  • Pitched the idea of a live action choose your own adventure type activity

  • Worked with stakeholders and subject matter experts to develop the script for Choose Your Own (Leadership) Adventure activity

  • Reached out to another internal team of video content creators, who before only produced content for outside customers, to help with this project and created an ongoing partnership for future live video production

  • Answered questions and provided feedback to director and on screen talent while on set during filming

  • Designed and developed the graphics, reference guides, and eLearning course

  • Recorded and edited the narration voiceover for this course

  • Created the software simulation found in this course
